Diversity is the differences among people that make us unique and shape our experiences. These differences include race, ethnicity, size, age, ability, gender, sex, socio economic status, sexual orientation, veteran status, gender identity and expression, birth order, spiritual practices, personality, thought process, research interests, personality…. the list is almost endless. The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion aims to create and maintain an accessible, inclusive and supportive community for all who learn, work and teach in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) and Extension at The Ohio State University.
The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is to serve as a resource to CFAES students, staff and faculty to enable them to:
- Create a college-wide culture that is welcoming and inclusive of all students, staff and faculty
- Recognize and address implicit bias, power, and privilege
- Be culturally competent to facilitate understanding and increase diversity and inclusion
- Utilize inclusive hiring practices
We are becoming more diverse as a college, but there are areas where diversity is lacking. Increasing the number of underrepresented populations is another goal of our office. However, increasing numbers is meaningless if we have an environment where faculty, staff, and students do not feel like they have a voice at the table. If the environment is not inclusive CFAES will not be a place where students, faculty, and staff want to be. Our college is on a journey to create the best place to work, learn and grow.
